SESAME SEED

 Sesame is a flowering plant in the genus Sesamum, also called benne. Numerous wild relatives occur in Africa and a smaller number in India.Sesame seeds {Sesamum or Benniseed} are the seed of the tropical annual Sesamum indicum. The species has a long history of cultivation, mostly for its yield of oil. Harvesting begins in late December and continues through July.

 The major producing areas in order of priority are Nassarawa, Jigawa and Benue states. Other important areas of production are; Yobe, Kano, Katsina, Kogi, Gombe and Plateau states. The major importer of sesame seed is Japan while the major consuming markets in the EU are Greece, Germany, Netherland and the UK. In the past, the bulk of sesame is imported from China. Increasingly, other sources such as India, Sudan, and most recently, Pakistan, are taking the market share. The USA is the fifth largest import market with a steady demand of over 50,000 tonnes per year. There is a wide variety of Sesame seeds varying in color from white to red to black, with oil content varying from 40 to 50 %.The white and black Sesame seeds are mainly used for direct consumption by its addition in several foods and for exports. The brown Sesame seeds are mainly used for oil extraction. These have oil content of around 45-50 %. The white Sesame seeds have the desirable nutty taste and are used for making sweets, baked foods and confectionaries. The black Sesame seeds are used for seasoning and for fries. Hulled seeds are also used for snack preparation.

 

Factors Influencing Sesame Seed Markets

1.Weather at the major domestic producing centers.

 2.Price of other competitive oils in nigeria and other producing countries, soy oil, palm oil, cottonseed oil, sunflower oil and mustard oil. 

3.International price movement of soy oil at CBOT and palm oil at BMD, Malaysia also influence the groundnut oil prices. 

4.Festivals and celebrations also increase consumption and the prices.
